For those who have played and hopefully enjoyed Son Gual, I am sure they have had many memorable moments on their round. Unfortunately we realise that our achilles heel at the moment is the quality of our fairways. 
To address this situation we are focusing as much energy into there improvement as possible. 
We are the only course on the island with 100% cool season grass fairway´s/semi-rough´s and although this means that in the winter we are the `greenest´ course on Mallorca it also means we have to give these areas much more tender loving care in the hot summer months. Also our soils have been damaged by the sodium levels which where previously applied through watering during the growing-in period and concentrated in the depressions of fairways. You may also notice the `Black´soils in these areas which represent the high sulphates. Son Gual has been very pro-active to solve these problems since I have been here, greatly improving the water quality in particular with the installation of the Reverse Osmosis System. This plant will give us very high quality water which, most importantly, will be low in un-wanted salt and bi-carbonates. It is our intention to then use the Reverse Osmosis plant to clean all of our waters and ultimately soils, by processing our lake waters through the osmosis during the winter months when we do not require outside water from the treatment plant. 
As you may have read we are heavily aerating our soil profile to facilitate the flushing of the salts. To aid this we also apply large quantities of Calcium (the white granules that you may notice on the fairways)  which chemically aid the movement of sodium and sulphates because of it´s denser properties. 
The hollow coring and frequent top-dressing over the winter months is also rapidly improving the actual growing medium for the grass plants, thus enabling them to become stronger and healthier in preperation for another hot Mallorcan summer!!!!
Next winter we will be extensively improving our drainage systems on the fairways, through the installation of sand bands in all the poor quality areas. This will improve the water movement in these areas and enable us to wash the sodiums and sulphates through quicker after all in the summer the last thing we want is water sitting in low areas, evaporating and leaving the residue salts behind. So I hope you will be understanding of the works which we are continually carrying out for the benefit of the course.
