Senior Tour "rookies" race underway

Sam Torrance may have seized the early initiative in the race to succeed Ian Woosnam as the number one European Senior Tour player but an equally intriguing battle is also underway in the contest to replace the Welshman as rookie of the year.
The 2008 campaign saw two Senior Tour newcomers - Woosnam and Peter Mitchell - win five tournaments between them, while Gordon Brand Jnr, Domingo Hospital and Angel Franco also just missed out on their maiden titles.
This season has seen a similarly impressive influx of rookies join the Senior Tour ranks, with American Mike Cunning the first to make an impression when he won the 2009 curtain raiser, the Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum.
Australian Mike Harwood, who also made his Senior Tour debut in Brunei, was next to shine when he finished third behind winner Torrance and runner up Franco in the DGM Barbados Open.
Like Mitchell last year, the five-time European Tour winner appears to have made a seamless return to competitive golf following a protracted break from the game and the 50-year-old will be hoping to make a similar impact to the Englishman who captured three titles in 2008.
The focus now turns to incoming rookies Stephen Bennett and Roger Chapman, who will make their Senior Tour bows in the Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open from May 8-10.
Bennett comes of Senior Tour age when he turns 50 on April 23 and the former European Tour champion returns to full-time competitive golf after a 10-year sabbatical, during which time he has been coaching Lincolnshire's county team and running his driving range and academy in Grimsby. 
"I'm really looking forward to getting back to tournament golf," he said.
"I've been playing locally on the Midlands Tour against players like Robert Rock and I've been playing well, so that has been a good test for myself.
"The Senior Tour will be good fun, catching up with some old friends like Glenn Ralph and Andy Murray, but I'm not taking it light-heartedly. You have your pride and you want to do well. I've been keeping fit mentally and physically and I've been keeping my hand in.
"I'm going to play as many of the tournaments that I can. You look at how well rookies such as Peter (Mitchell) have done and it does give you an incentive, but you have to actually do it yourself."
Bennett's sole European Tour win came in Africa - in the 1985 Tunisian Open - but he will be hoping to make an immediate impact on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where he finished tied fourth in the Open de Baleares, on The European Tour in 1991. 
"I was leading after the second and third round in Mallorca before eventually finishing fourth behind Gavan Levenson, so I've done well there before, but it is a new course so it will be a different challenge," said Bennett.
"I stopped playing after I lost my Tour card in 1999 but I've kept involved in the game and hopefully I will come back stronger mentally.
"I'm looking forward to getting the buzz of tournament golf back. That is the one thing you can't explain to an amateur - the buzz you get from playing tournaments.
"I've been keeping a close eye on the Senior Tour and the standard is really high. Roger (Chapman) is no slouch either - he can certainly play - so with the players we've already got I'd say the Tour will certainly be stronger than ever this year."

Rocca confirmed for inaugural Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open

Italy's most decorated golfer Costantino Rocca has confirmed he will be part of a strong European Senior Tour field at the inaugural Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open from May 8-10.

Rocca, who memorably beat Tiger Woods in his singles Match in The 1997 Ryder Cup and narrowly lost in a play-off to John Daly in The 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, won the Senior Tour Rookie of the Year in 2007 and is one of the most consistent players on the over 50s circuit.

The former Ryder Cup player will be joined at the event by Irishman Des Smyth, who previously tasted success in Spain winning the Madrid Open in 1993.

Rocca and Smyth have both registered for the tournament at Son Gual Golf, in Palma, with many more of the leading Senior Tour players to follow suit.

Mallorca's finest golf address is certain to provide exemplary playing conditions for Europe's best senior professionals during the €300,000 event, which has a first prize of €45,000.

 European Senior Tour heads to Mallorca

 Golf Son Gual, the most prestigious golf address on the sunshine island of Mallorca, will host the Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open from May 8-10, 2009, underlining the club's growing reputation as one of Europe's finest golfing venues.

The course, designed by three-time German Amateur Champion Thomas Himmel, opened in October last year and will host some of the leading players on the European Senior Tour.

Andreas Pamer, of Son Gual, said: "We are delighted to have been chosen to host this prestigious event and look forward to providing some of the leading names in European golf with the perfect canvass on which to compete.

Staraufgebot beim Debüt der European Senior Tour auf den Balearen: Viele große Namen des Profigolfsports starten bei der Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open, die vom 8. bis 10. Mai 2009 erstmals stattfinden wird. Der bereits anderthalb Jahre nach Eröffnung von der Fachwelt unisono als Weltklasseplatz bewertete Championship Course von Son Gual Golf in der Nähe von Palma bietet den perfekten Schauplatz für die außergewöhnliche Veranstaltung.

Ian Woosnam, der seine zweite Saison bei den „Champions" bestreitet, führt die Gilde der europäischen Top-Professionals an, die für das Turnier gemeldet haben. Er gewann in der abgelaufenen Saison zwei Turniere und wurde Erster der Rangliste 2008 sowie „Rookie of the Year". Seinen festen Platz in der Golfgeschichte hat der Waliser vor allem durch seinen Major-Titel bei den US Masters im Jahre 1991 sowie aufgrund seiner äußerst positiven Bilanz als Ryder Cup Spieler. Seit 1983 nahm Woosnam acht Mal in Folge am Ryder Cup teil und kämpfte erfolgreich gegen die jahrzehntelange Dominanz der Amerikaner an. Diese Erfahrung zeichnete sich 2006 in besonderem Maße aus, als Woosnam als Kapitän des europäischen Teams im irischen K-Club die USA deutlich besiegte.

Woosnams Freund und Weggefährte Sam Torrance aus Schottland blickt auf eine ganz ähnliche Golfkarriere zurück. Ebenfalls acht Mal hintereinander vertrat er Europa beim Ryder Cup in den 80er und 90er-Jahren bevor er 2002 zum Käpitan ernannt wurde. Durch eine taktische Meisterleistung gewann Torrance‘ Team mit drei Punkten Vorsprung gegen die seinerzeit favorisierten Amerikaner. Als European Senior Tour Spieler konnte er bis zur abgelaufenen Saison zehn Titel erringen und war 2005 und 2006 an der Spitze der Rangliste. Sein elfter Sieg folgte vor wenigen Wochen auf Barbados, wo er mit vier Schlägen Vorsprung ins Ziel kam und nun als Führender der „Money List" ins Rennen geht.

Mark James, ein weiterer ehemaliger Ryder Cup Kapitän, führte die Konkurrenten aus Übersee bereits 1999 - beim Ryder Cup in Brookline - an den Rand einer Niederlage. Die amerikanischen Gastgeber gewannen am Ende denkbar knapp mit 14,5 zu 13,5 Punkten. Der English Amateur Champion von 1974 war davor sieben Mal als Spieler im europäischen Team. Bei den Senioren gewann der Engländer seit 2004 vier Titel, drei davon in den USA, wo er hauptsächlich am Start war.

Auch die Vita des Vierten im Bunde ist untrennbar mit dem Ryder Cup verbunden. Costantino Rocca, dem erfolgreichsten italienischen Golfer aller Zeiten, gelang 1997, beim letzten seiner drei Ryder Cup Auftritte für Europa, der entscheidende Punkt zum Sieg über die USA. Gegner im spanischen Valderrama war seinerzeit der Weltranglisten-Erste Tiger Woods. Rocca ist seit 2007 auf der Senior Tour unterwegs und wurde dort auf Anhieb u.a. durch seine zwei Siege „Rookie of the Year" sowie zweiter der Rangliste.

Komplettiert wird die Riege der ehemaligen Ryder Cup Spieler durch den Iren Des Smyth und den Engländer Gordon J Brand. Smyth war bereits auf beiden Senioren Touren erfolgreich und kann auf insgesamt vier Siege zurückblicken. Brand errang auf der European Senior Tour zwei Siege 2006, gewann 2007 einmal und auch im vergangenen Jahr holte er zwei Titel.

Carl Mason gelang der Durchbruch eigentlich erst bei den Senioren, auch wenn er zu European Tour Zeiten sicherlich zu den überdurchschnittlichen Professionals gehörte. Mit sage und schreibe 20 Erfolgen auf der European Senior Tour, ein Sieg im letzten Jahr, dominierte der Engländer jahrelang das Feld. Er wurde seit 2003 dreimal Erster und zweimal Zweiter der Rangliste.

Der Kölner Torsten Giedeon, der zusammen mit Bernhard Langer den World Cup 1990 gewann, wird die Fahne für Deutschland hochhalten. Der 51-Jährige bestreitet dieses Jahr seine zweite Saison auf der European Senior Tour.

Insgesamt haben all diese Spieler mehr als 80 Turniertitel auf der European Tour und viele weitere internationale Erfolge errungen. Ein Grund mehr, sich die Rückkehr des professionellen Golfsports auf Mallorca nicht entgehen zu lassen.

Am Mittwoch und Donnerstag vor dem eigentlichen Event werden die sogenannten Pro-Am-Turniere ausgetragen, bei dem jeweils drei Amateure und ein Golfpro zusammen im Team spielen.

Da es bei den Senioren keinen Cut gibt, können alle Interessierten sicher sein, ihre Idole bis zum Schlusstag auf der Runde begleiten zu können. Rund um das „Palacio" - dem Wahrzeichen von Son Gual Golf -  befindet sich die öffentliche Bewirtung mit inseltypischen Essen und Trinken. Dort kann jeder Gast den aktuellen Spielstand auf dem großen Hole-by-Hole-Scoreboard ablesen und bekommt allerlei Informatives im Ausstellungsbereich geboten.
